What is high potential and gifted education?
High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.
At Mowbray Public School, we hold high expectations for all of our learners. We support high potential and gifted students in the classroom by:
- assessing and identifying students' learning needs in the classroom and implementing evidence-informed teaching practices to challenge and extend students.
- providing supportive classroom environments to promote a sense of belonging and encourage the learning dispositions of risk-taking, creativity, reflection, resilience and being a team player.
- using flexible groupings to encourage students to take leadership roles and providing timely, strength-based feedback to drive future learning.
- Our teachers engage in high quality professional learning to support the diverse needs of all students, including our high potential and gifted learners.
At Mowbray Public School, we recognise that high potential and gifted learners will flourish when supported with a range of opportunities across the four domains of potential: intellectual, creative, social-emotional and physical. These opportunities include:
- Music program - band and strings
- Stage 1, 2 and 3 performance dance groups
- Junior and Senior Choirs
- Performance opportunities, including Performing Arts Night (PAN)
- Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) club
- Writing competitions, such as the Willoughby Writing Competition for Year 5 students
- Gardening Club
- Art club
- North Harbour Learning Community Leadership Day with Chatswood High School
- Local school network SRC meetings for school leaders
- Year 6 mini-fete
- Class buddy program
- School wellbeing programs, including the Get GRIT program.
Mowbray Public School students are supported to participate in a range of state-wide enrichment and extension opportunities, such as:
- PSSA representative sports pathways
- Premier's challenges, including the Sporting Challenge, Reading Challenge, Debating Challenge and Spelling Bee
- Write-On student writing competition
- Multicultural Public Speaking competition
